BPLD: The Next Chapter

Introduction

The Bourbonnais Public Library has always reflected the values of our community: curiosity, opportunity, service, and belonging. For more than 40 years, we've thoughtfully expanded programs and services while responsibly stewarding taxpayer resources. As our community continues to grow, so do the ways people use their library. This initiative is an investment in a stronger community, one that ensures every resident has access to the spaces, technology, programs, and opportunities they need today and tomorrow.

What Your Vote Means

A Yes Vote Means:

Long-term financial sustainability. The Library will be sustainably funded, enabling programs, services, materials, and staffing to continue operating at current levels and grow to meet the community's needs.

The Library will have the financial resources to address major repairs and replacements. The scheduled major replacements and repairs to the parking lot, roof, heating, and cooling systems will proceed, allowing our Library building and grounds to continue meeting the standards of our community.

Community feedback about noise will be acted upon. An expansion to the Library will be planned with quiet reading, meeting, tutoring, and coworking spaces prioritized.

Increase in collections, programming, and services. Community survey feedback shows that our patrons want more eBooks and audiobooks, additional physical books, a Library of Things, expanded programming, and an updated playspace. With proper funding, the library could sustainably meet those community needs.

This referendum represents an investment in preserving the services residents value today while preparing the Library to serve Bourbonnais for decades to come.

A No Vote Means:

Operating costs will exceed the Library’s current revenue. Every year, the Library remains underfunded; our patrons will notice decreases across all areas to cover the essentials of operations.

The Library building and grounds will continue to deteriorate as major repairs and replacements are deferred, and the proposed expansion will not move forward. The Library completed an assessment of the property in late 2024. Within the next 8 years, major projects and replacements are estimated to cost $415,779. Without an increase in revenue, these repairs will be deferred. Current funding that supports the materials, programming, and services that Bourbonnais Library provides to the community will have to be diverted to saving for these costs. Over time, the Bourbonnais Library will look less and less like the clean, well-maintained facility the community can be proud of. Additionally, the proposed expansion, informed by community feedback, will not happen without increased funding.

Operating hours and staffing will be reduced, resulting in longer waits for help and challenges for those needing weekend or evening hours.

Programming will be limited to those that require minimal staffing, incur little to no cost, and occur less frequently. Programs that do remain may accommodate fewer attendees.

Services and materials will be limited and outdated. Bourbonnais Library serves as a central hub for community members, offering notary services, access to technology like computers, copying, printing, faxing, and assistance with finding information and books. However, reductions in operating hours, staffing, and technology funding will result in fewer services available to our community. With limited funds for our book collection, our community would see fewer new books, significantly longer wait times for popular titles, and reduced digital collections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Community's Needs

Results from our 2026 survey reflect our community’s need for quiet reading and study spaces, larger book collections, an updated playspace, and more accessible parking. The Library is proud to serve a vibrant population of all ages and is a hub of bustling activity. With that, concerns about noise and limited space for studying and co-working are top of mind for our community and library leadership. We recognize the need for updated spaces to better serve our community; however, current space and financial constraints provide the Library with limited options to address these concerns.

A successful referendum vote would mean the library could maintain its current hours, services, and staffing, and also expand the building to better meet our community’s needs. This proposed expansion could include:

  • 2 large group work spaces
  • 2 smaller study rooms
  • New Tech Services office with a drive-up book drop
    • This will allow for a reimagining of the current tech space for “library of things” storage and new technology for patron use.
  • Computer area has been relocated to the new addition for a quieter experience.
    • This will create space for expanded collections and playspace for our younger patrons.
  • Adult Fiction, Large Print, and Nonfiction relocated and expanded
    • Further allowance for the playspace to grow and be updated, and collection expansion for Teen and Graphic novels
  • Two new areas with comfortable seating and tables reserved for quiet reading and studying.
  • A large new parking lot and more accessible parking spots
  • A shaded patio area
